These black baby Koi are called fry. Color of the Koi will start to appear sometime between week 3 and 12 after they are born.

Do Koi change color as they grow?

It’s the same thing with koi. Their scales can change color depending on their exposure to that bright orb in the sky.

They won’t turn an Oompa-Loompa orange during the summer (though that may not be a bad thing to some koi keepers!), but you may notice a color change in some of your fish after their winter slumber.

Why is my koi fish losing its color?
Skinny fish can often be very brightly colored. Once you bring them home and feed them they start to gain weight, and can lose their color if not provided with an adequate diet.

Any kind of stress can cause koi to quickly lose their color. One of the most common causes of stress is poor water quality.
