Keeping koi is one of the pinnacles of the art of fish keeping. The magnificent and often expensive fish have inspired a fanatical following, with collectors prepared to devote a lot of time and resources to creating a flourishing koi pond.
One of the top priorities for koi keepers is coping with fish that become ill. Left untreated, many fish suffer and die. The book is divided into four parts:
- Part one addresses the all-important subject of disease prevention, which includes creating the optimal environment. A checklist outlines regular maintenance tasks to ensure water quality.
- Part two covers the “essential skills” of koi keeping, including anatomy, biology and handling koi.
- Part three is a comprehensive A-to-Z guide that covers diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered koi disease.
- Part four describes various methods to administer treatment to koi, such as medicinal baths and dips.
Manual of Koi Health is written specifically for koi keepers, whether they are novices with a single pond or serious koi enthusiasts deeply involved in breeding or exhibiting. Testing the Waters
In order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. Most common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH. All may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly. Testing aquarium water weekly will aid in keeping your most important water parameters within the proper range for your aquarium. Choose from a wide range of API testing options, such as our popular FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT or 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS, for accurate water evaluation. Regular testing will help you easily determine your aquarium conditions.

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water’s GH levels regularly with this easy-to-use API GH & KH TEST KIT for freshwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Water hardness is a measure of the dissolved mineral content of water. There are two types: the general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). When keeping freshwater fish and plants, the GH and the KH of aquarium water should match their natural habitat. The API GH & KH TEST KIT helps aquarists duplicate the natural habitat of their fish, as well as detect low KH levels, which can lead to rapid and wide pH shifts, stressing fish. API GH & KH TEST KIT contains KH test bottle, GH test bottle, instructions with color card, and two capped glass test tubes. Good water quality is the key to a healthy, beautiful pond. Tap water often contains chemicals such as chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals.
These disinfectants make water safe for drinking, but they are highly toxic to pond life. High levels of disinfectants destroy fish gill tissue, preventing the uptake of oxygen, which can lead to fish death. Even low levels will irritate delicate fish tissue.
Tap water must be treated before adding fish to make sure they remain healthy. API POND CHLORINE & HEAVY METAL NEUTRALIZER instantly removes chlorine and neutralizes chloramines.
It also detoxifies heavy metals such as copper, lead, zinc, and other heavy metals found in tap and well water.
Use this solution in freshwater ponds that are being filled for the first time, and when you’re adding or changing water in an existing pond in order to help protect pond life.
