We have always been very convenient when it comes to pets. The only difference was that unlike many people we never had preferences between cats and dogs.

Both of us grew up with these animals loving them equally and it remained like that throughout life. It may be in the fact that this common love for four-legged friends was the reason that we fell in love with each other in the first place.

That said taking care of pets, knowing which kitchen tools we need to prepare their food, etc are super simple!

We never knew anything about fish, though. But in our defense, we also never consider having a fish.  However, it turned out that life wanted that one to adopt us! What happened, you may wonder!? Well, a close friend appeared with a fish tank and two Koi fish at a birthday party!

As much as it was something completely unexpected we couldn’t refuse a gift so after all the guests left, we remained with an animal we knew nothing about!  “Okay”, we thought, “how hard can it be? We just need to make sure that the water is clean and that they have adequate food!” But then we realized that we don’t know what fish eat. Do they all eat the same type of food?

Oh, you wouldn’t imagine what we found researching. It turned out that there are different types of fish food, that various fish have different food preferences, etc.

But do you want to hear the craziest thing we discovered? Although people most commonly buy fish food in stores, it is also possible to make it at home! And as crazy as it sounds we liked the idea!

So we started to research to learn more about different things fish eat, how to combine and prepare the ingredients, etc.

It turned out that it is super fun and pretty cost-effective.  We liked so much what we learned from reading and talking with experts that we decided to write a text about it.

Stay with us if you are a pet fish owner and want to offer your little aquarium friend another food experience.

How to Start

Okay, so you decided to stop going to the fish food bank and make delicacies for your friend from the ocean (or sea, river).

The first thing you need to know is that all fish eat differently. Hence, knowing the exact best combination isn’t always straightforward.

Checking the labels on the packets that you bought in the fish food chain shop can be a good way to figure out the ingredients.

You can also Google to find out whether your fish is omnivore, herbivore, or carnivore. It is important because you will easily decide on fish food ingredients based on that.

We are pretty sure that you know it, but we will mention it just in case. Herbivores eat mainly plants; carnivores eat meat and other fish, and omnivores eat everything!

Plants for Fish Food

When it comes to plants and veggies that you will put in a fish food dispenser we recommend that you use organically grown food to avoid fish food poisoning due to pesticides.

Fish like dark leafy veggies such as romaine lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, and sushi seaweed.  You can also use fruit such as apples, pears, and oranges. It may not cross your mind but garlic turns out to be sort of a superfood for fish.

Animal Based Ingredients

When choosing animal protein it is also best to look for organically grown or wild sources.  Fish is generally often too used to make homemade fish food.

Fish that lived in the wild are rich in various nutrients that are necessary for a balanced diet of an omnivore or carnivore.

Earthworms are also a good source of protein. Besides, fish like them, and are rather inexpensive. You can also use blood worms, brine shrimp, and other bulk frozen foods.
